Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two director Christopher McQuarrie has shared a new image from the upcoming sequel, teasing a deadly Arctic mission. After the franchise got its start nearly 27 years ago, the story of Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is set to come to an end with two highly-anticipated final installments. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is currently in post-production and due out this summer while the seemingly concluding chapter in the franchise is currently in the midst of production.
Although the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two release date is still about a year and a half away, McQuarrie‘s new Instagram post teases some of what’s to come in the final movie, including a frigid, Arctic mission of some sort. Check out the director’s post below:
McQuarrie doesn’t specify where exactly the snowy location is, but some Mission: Impossible 8 filming is reported to have taken place in Svalbard, an archipelago between Norway and the North Pole. As for the fur-clad warrior in the photo, McQuarrie’s caption reveals that it is Inuit actor Lucy Tulugarjuk.
Where Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two Takes Place
While story details for Mission: Impossible 8 are being kept under wraps, a number of the movie’s filming locations have been revealed, providing some indication as to what to expect. Regarding Svalbard, the snowy location possibly pictured above, the Mission: Impossible 8 production was recently denied permission to shoot sequences in locations on the protected archipelago that would require extensive helicopter activity. It remains unclear how this setback will affect the final film, but Cruise and McQuarrie are said to have a filming backup plan.
In addition to the snowy locations, part of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two was filmed in the U.K., with Cruise spotted paragliding in the Lake District last summer. More recently, the production traveled to the Aegean Sea off the coast of Italy to film aboard an American aircraft carrier. McQuarrie even posted several pictures of Mission: Impossible 8‘s aircraft carrier filming, providing a look at the ship’s flight deck and a new character played by Hannah Waddingham.
Finally, Mission: Impossible 8 has also filmed a significant aerial sequence in South Africa. Photos and videos of Cruise from the shoot have previously been revealed, showing the star clutching to the top of a biplane as it carries out some dangerous aerial maneuvers. With Mission: Impossible 8‘s Svalbard filming plans having fallen through, it remains to be seen where the globe-trotting production will go next. It’s also unclear just how much filming for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two remains, but the movie certainly seems like it won’t be short on picturesque locations.
