His role in this film deviates from his anti-hero/bad-boy role in the show. Instead, the new movie shows a more mature Derek, focusing on guiding his son, who is gaining werewolf powers. His maturation is evident in the change of eye color at the film’s end.
Taking place over a decade after the original Teen Wolf timeline, Derek’s journey as a werewolf has been complicated. Since the series ended, his eyes have been blue, symbolizing a beta who has killed an innocent human. The blue color resulted from Derek’s mercy killing of his girlfriend, Paige.
Derek’s Red Eyes Before His Death Proved He Was Always An Alpha In Teen Wolf
When Derek sacrifices himself to kill the Nogitsune, Derek’s eyes change from blue to red, which appears when a werewolf becomes an Alpha. Alphas are considered the most powerful of the werewolf species. Their powers come from the “alpha spark” manifested most commonly through inheritance or theft by killing an alpha. Derek originally became an alpha after killing his uncle Peter, but during the Teen Wolf Movie ending, he becomes a “True Alpha,” the rarest werewolf type. Because he did something of honor and with his greatest strength, his status as a true Alpha seemed to return briefly before Derek’s honorary death. Throughout the show, Derek makes similar sacrifices for those he holds dear. His ability to turn into a true alpha shows that Derek has always had the leadership and selfless traits necessary.
How Derek’s Eye Color Change Continued A Teen Wolf Trend
The color of supernatural creatures’ eyes distinguishes rank, power, and type. Of all the eye color changes in the show, Derek has gone through the most. His initial color was yellow, the primary color of beta wolves. They subsequently become blue and red after becoming an alpha in season one. After losing his alpha status and becoming an evolved wolf, he regains his yellow-eye status briefly before returning to the original blue color.
While Derek Hale’s arc may have seemingly ended, the movie still left one Derek mystery unanswered concerning the mother of his son Eli. Teen Wolf: The Movie doesn’t touch on the subject at all, but it could be explored in a potential spin-off around Eli. Characters don’t tend to stay dead in the Teen Wolf universe, so Derek could reunite with his son in some aspect.
