Everything We Know About Pain Hustlers

Pain Hustlers tells the story of single mother Liza, who lands a job with a failing pharmaceutical company and must turn things around with her charm and drive to change her and her daughter’s life for the better. The movie’s tone is said to take heavy influence from other similar films detailing real-life conspiracies, such as The Big Short, American Hustle, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Actors Andy García, Catherine O’Hara, Jay Duplass, Brian d’Arcy James, and Chloe Coleman round out the Netflix movie’s cast.

The real-life story behind Pain Hustlers was first told in the 2018 New York Times Magazine interactive article titled The Pain Hustlers. The article detailed the racketeering scheme involving a bankrupt pharmaceutical company called Insys Therapeutics. Netflix’s movie adaptation, Pain Hustlers, tells the story of a pharmaceutical company that only had one branded product — an addictive painkiller. To do so, the crew behind the movie will have both Hughes’ article and book to pull inspiration from, plus the real-life trial. The movie will be an interesting turn away from the iconic Captain America role for star Evans.

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers looking up in Captain America Civil War

Evans rose to global stardom after portraying Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor has appeared in over 10 MCU movies as Steve Rogers, including his own critically acclaimed Captain America trilogy. 2019’s Avengers: Endgame beautifully ended his character’s story in the MCU, allowing the actor to explore different roles in his career. Since hanging up the shield, Evans has taken varied roles, mostly in the action genre. The actor’s Netflix turn in The Gray Man and the upcoming movies Red One and the Ana de Armas two-hander Ghosted help cement Evans as a bona fide action star. Evans also proved himself as a strong comedy actor, with a breakout role in the murder mystery Knives Out. Now, the conspiracy drama Pain Hustlers should present another side to the actor’s post-MCU career.
