What’s The Future Of Shazam In The DCU?

The cheerful Shazam! Fury of the Gods BTS video comes during a time when the future of the DC sub-franchise is very much in doubt following the leadership shake-up. James Gunn and Peter Safran have been named the co-CEOs of the rebranded DC Studios and their first major announcement for the new DCU, (formerly known as the DCEU) was that Henry Cavill would be not returning as Superman despite Black Adam‘s post-credits scene. This has led to concern that a full-on reboot is on the way with more heroes being re-cast, including Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and Zachary Levi’s Shazam.

After suggesting the recasting rumors were unfounded, Levi changed his tone when he clarified Shazam’s future amid the current DC drama. While the actor believes that Shazam! Fury of Gods is a “pretty good movie” which will hopefully put him in a “pretty good position,” he’s not aware of what the future holds for the character. Levi also suggested that if Gunn and Safran wanted to recast Shazam, he would support their decision.

The future is even more uncertain for the newcomers in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, including the supremely talented Rachel Zegler who rose from relative obscurity to stardom with her role in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and will also be starring in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Disney’s new Snow White movie alongside Gal Gadot. For now, the only thing to do is wait until Gunn and Safran reveal their plans for the upcoming DCU slate at the beginning of the new year. After that, Shazam! Fury of Gods will be released in theaters on March 17, 2023.
