John Wick: Chapter 4 has already almost doubled the box office gross of the original film. Keanu Reeves’ titular ex-assassin, who has now firmly been dragged back into the old business, debuted his latest adventure in theaters last weekend on March 24. Capping off a terrific March at the box office, Chapter 4 took in the franchise’s highest-grossing opening weekend yet, taking in $73.8 million at the domestic box office.

Per Collider, in just one week the latest John Wick sequel has reached a huge box office milestone. Chapter 4 has passed $150 million, making it the third highest-grossing movie of the year so far. Not only this, it has nearly doubled the total run of the original John Wick, which only grossed $86 million before leaving theaters.

Is Anything Stopping John Wick: Chapter 4 From Becoming the Highest-Grossing in the Franchise?

So far, John Wick is the only film the new entry has outgrossed in its entirety. John Wick: Chapter 2 made a much more considerable $171.5 million worldwide. John Wick: Chapter 3 outdid even that benchmark, going on to earn a grand total of $327.7 million.

It should be quite easy for Chapter 4 to overtake Chapter 2. However, while it is entirely within the realm of possibility that it can outgross Chapter 3, it needs to show a strong hold on its audience over the next few weekends. While the release of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves may steal some of John Wick‘s thunder this weekend, early April sees the releases of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Renfield, two subsequent releases that likely won’t be a huge draw for John Wick‘s demographic, giving it a chance to surge forward.

John Wick: Chapter 4‘s post-credits scene hinted that the franchise is going to expand even further beyond the already announced spinoffs, including the television series The Continental and the Ana de Armas spinoff Ballerina. This week, a brand new project was indeed confirmed following the film’s staggering opening gross. Considering the franchise’s upward trajectory, it seems entirely possible that whatever comes next could turn in even more astounding numbers.
