John Wick Spinoff Ballerina With Ana De Armas Gets Release Date Window

[ad_1]

The Ana de Armas-led John Wick spinoff movie Ballerina receives an estimated release date window. De Armas will portray Rooney, a ballerina-turned-assassin previously introduced in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, where she was portrayed by Unity Phelan. Set between Parabellum and the recently released John Wick: Chapter 4, Ballerina will also see Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and Anjelica Huston reprise their roles from prior films.

While speaking to Deadline following John Wick: Chapter 4′s box office success, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake addresses when audiences can expect to next return to the franchise’s world on the big screen with Ballerina. While the producer doesn’t give a specific date for the de Armas-led film’s release, Drake states that Ballerina will be part of the studio’s 2024 slate, explaining that Lionsgate is looking to release the film within the spring or summer season.

Why Ballerina Could Be Important To The Future Of The John Wick Franchise

With John Wick: Chapter 4 proving to be an incredible success for Lionsgate, it is clear that the studio is eager to capitalize on the franchise’s popularity with audiences, with Drake hoping Reeves will play Wick again in a potential future installment. While director Chad Stahelski is open to developing John Wick 5, it remains to be seen if another story for Wick is possible. Ballerina could now be seen as a test of how the franchise could move forward without Reeves in the leading role.

While Reeves will reprise his role of Wick in Ballerina, the film will focus primarily on Rooney. As such, Ballerina‘s potential success could indicate whether audiences would be drawn to the franchise itself without Reeves’ Wick in the lead role. Should Ballerina prove successful in the eyes of Lionsgate, it is possible that the studio will feel more comfortable in greenlighting other potential projects based on supporting John Wick characters, knowing that audiences are fascinated and invested.

Though John Wick: Chapter 4 may potentially resolve Wick’s story, the film’s critical and box office success shows that audiences are still eager for more of the series. As such, while it may be just over a year before Ballerina, interest could only grow from here. Between both the spinoff and the television series The Continental set to expand the world, John Wick’s domain isn’t going anywhere just yet.
