Why did the Philadelphia Eagles trade Nick Foles? Exploring what happened to the Super Bowl-winning QB

[ad_1]

Nick Foles wrote his name into football folklore when he won the Super Bowl for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018. The quarterback led his team to a stunning 41-33 win over the New England Patriots and picked up the MVP award in the big game.

Interestingly, Foles wasn’t even the first-choice quarterback for Philadelphia that season. He was promoted as a starter after Carson Wentz suffered a torn ACL injury near the end of the regular season.

Despite leading the Eagles on an exceptional playoff run and their first-ever Super Bowl title, Foles was traded by the team the following season.

Many believed that Philadelphia would slap their franchise tag on Foles to keep him on the team. The Eagles also announced on January 19, 2019, that they would pick up the $20 million option on Foles’ contract.

However, the quarterback informed Philadelphia that he would void the option, making him a free agent. According to reports, Foles was interested in playing regular football as a starter.

The unceremonious split between the Eagles and Foles led to the quarterback signing for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the offseason.

Nick Foles was picked by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft. He earned Pro Bowl honors in 2013 but after a disappointing 2014 season, he was traded to the St. Louis Rams.

The quarterback struggled at St. Louis and was released after just one season. He spent the following year as a backup for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Foles returned to the Eagles in 2017 and helped Philadelphia clinch their first Super Bowl title in 2018.

He opted out of his Eagles contract in 2019 to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he suffered an injury in the opening game of the season which forced him to miss most of the campaign.

Foles was traded to the Chicago Bears in 2020 and spent two seasons with the team. In 2022, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts in a backup role.

Throughout his NFL career so far, Nick Foles has thrown for 14,227 yards and 82 touchdowns on 1,302 passes.
