DCEU star Zachary Levi has a very wild Shazam! 3 pitch for DC Studios co-CEO/filmmaker James Gunn ahead of the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Zachary Levi has a very wild Shazam! 3 pitch for DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. While the DCEU is slowly coming to an end, there are still a few movies left for Warner Bros. Discovery to release before the new DC Universe is born. The first one for 2023 is Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which will continue Billy Batson and his adoptive family’s story after the 2019 Shazam! film. In the sequel, the Shazam Family is faced with more than just one threat as the Daughters of Atlas arrive in the DCEU. While a trilogy has always been envisioned for Shazam, time will tell if they will actually get there after the second film.
In a recent interview with Fandango, Levi spoke about the future of the Shazam! movie franchise. When asked if he had any ideas he would pitch Gunn, Levi made it clear that he has never imagined what the future of the franchise would look like, partially due to the younger actors growing up so fast. However, the Shazam! star did pitch the idea of doing a Shazam! 3, where the heroes are forced to battle zombies. Rather than seeing any of them undead, Levi thought it would be fun if they had to take on “hordes of the undead,” sharing the following:
With our particular franchise, it’s been very difficult for me to wrap my head around what would be the move. Partly because all the kids are growing like weeds, so I don’t even know how that applies to the dynamic of what the movie’s going to be. I’ve never seen a superhero zombie movie. Genuinely, I would love to kill zombies, and I think it would be really fun to do Shazam [3]. Not an undead Shazam, but rather we’re having to fight off like hordes of the undead.
Will There Even Be A Shazam 3?
The DC Universe is set to be a new beginning for Warner Bros. Discovery’s attempt at an interconnected superhero franchise. After Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash will be a major reset for the studio as the DCEU gets retooled into the DC Universe. Gunn has already stated that various actors will be replaced in some of the iconic rules, including Superman and Batman. However, there are still some things that may or may not carry into the DC Universe from the DCEU.
That begs the question of Shazam! 3’s possibilities within the DC Universe. It all depends on various factors, including how Shazam! Fury of the Gods does commercially as well as critically. There is always the chance that Gunn sees a natural place for this version of the Shazam Family to continue in his new universe. If that’s the case, the DC Studios co-CEO will likely find a way to make it work. However, Gunn’s interest and Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ success may not be the ultimate factor in making a sequel possible. Warner Bros. Discovery may also take Levi’s potential anti-vax tweets into serious account.
Warner Bros. Discovery hasn’t commented on Levi’s statements, which became a controversy, and was right before the big DC Universe slate announcement. Time will tell if Levi’s tweet will play any role in whether or not Shazam! 3 ends up happening after the second film. But in the end, the Shazam! franchise could possibly be over simply due to the DCEU being on its last legs before the big reset. Once Shazam! Fury of the Gods arrives in theaters, and its box office numbers begin coming out, that will likely hint at whether or not Shazam! 3 will be possible.
